Beginning in 1967, Bowie showed an interest in Buddhism; after a few months’ study at Tibet House in London, he was told by a Lama, ‘You do not want to be Buddhist. You should follow music.’

In 1992 Bowie knelt on stage at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and recited the Lord’s Prayer before a television audience of up to one billion people.

In 1993, Bowie said he had an undying belief in the unquestionable existence of God. On 10th of January 2016, two days after his 69th birthday Bowie died from liver cancer in his New York City apartment.

Bowie stipulated that he be cremated and his ashes scattered in Bali in accordance with the Buddhist rituals.

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom’s a junkie
Strung out in heaven’s high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again I tell myself
I’ll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh, no, not again

I’m stuck with a valuable friend
I’m happy. Hope you’re happy, too.
One flash of light
But no smoking pistol

I never done good things
I never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue,
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now
