Mania is a state of abnormally elevated arousal, affect, and energy level often conceived as a mirror image to depression.

Mania is a syndrome of multiple causes, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, multiple sclerosis, certain medications, or certain substances of abuse, as cocaine or anabolic steroids.

Still manic persons often can be mistaken for being on drugs.

1. Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
2. Decreased need for sleep
3. Pressure to keep talking
4. Experience that thoughts are racing
5. Increase in goal directed activity
6. Distractibility (too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli)
7. Excessive involvement in activities with a high likelihood of painful consequences.(extravagant shopping, sexual adventures or improbable commercial schemes)
